GoPro Announces Hero 5 Black, Hero 5 Session and More!

Monday was a HUGE day for GoPro as they held a launch event at Squaw Valley Ski Resort in Northern California. CEO Nick Woodman announced two new cameras and a drone to be released by the end of this year. The Hero 5 Black and the Hero 5 Session will both come out October 2nd, while the GoPro Karma Drone will arrive shortly after on October 23rd. In addition to the new hardware, a cloud-based subscription service was also announced to go along with the devices, called GoPro Plus.

Shared highlights of both new cameras include being able to capture 4K video at a max of 30 frames per second, electronic image stabilization, voice control in seven languages and water resistance out of the box up to 33 feet without a housing!

Hero 5 Black

  • 2-inch LCD touchscreen
  • Built-in GPS
  • Can capture RAW photos and Wide Dynamic Range video

Hero 5 Session

  • Same ultra-compact display-less form factor as original Session
  • Offers many of the same features as the HERO 5 Black as noted above

GoPro Karma

The Karma Drone will be available for $799

  • Compact foldable drone that is able to fit inside a backpack
  • Two joysticks and a take-off/land button
  • Built in flip-up touchscreen on the controller
  • Can fly with the new Hero 5 Black, Hero 5 Session, and Hero 4
  • 3-axis gimbal at the front of the drone that stabilizes the cameras for smooth footage
  • Gimbal can also be removed from the drone for handheld use
  • “Karma Grip” handheld stabilizer that has buttons able to to control the camera’s shutter, modes, and the angle of the gimbal
  • $1099 with Hero 5 Black and $999 with Hero 5 Session

GoPro Plus

This is a definite game changer for GoPro as editing and sharing has never been made easier. This cloud-based subscription service allows the the cameras to automatically back up footage and photos while charging. It will first be released in the United States on October 2nd and will cost $4.99 per month after a free trial. Come January 2017, GoPro Plus will be released in additional markets.
