Scooter Sizing: How to Choose the Right Size Scooter
In reality, kids can ride a scooter of any size. However, it doesn’t mean this will help them progress and be comfortable while scootering. Once kids start progressing in the sport, size will matter.
Here are a some tips on choosing the right size scooter for your kids or you:
Beginner Scooter Riders
Stay away from foldable scooters or Razor brand scooters. One of the most important things to consider when purchasing a scooter for a beginner is to never purchase something bigger, thinking he/she will grow into it. For an adult, any scooter size is fine. For kids, something too big will hinder their progressions and confidence.
Scooters
Scooters have been around for decades and have been improved in their quality, technology and ability to use from their initial beginnings to the present day. Scooter technology and design has changed over the years to suit how they are used nowadays. To choose the right scooter for you, you’ll need to decide how you plan to use it. Most scooters are suited for simple transport, whereas pro scooters are made specifically with tricks and stunts in mind.
Scooter Bars
Scooter bars come in various widths and heights. Riders that are more advanced prefer a specific style and height. Evolve Scooter Shop carries a variety of bars to choose from!
Diameter
Note if the outer diameter of your bar is oversized or standard; this will determine what clamp will fit. You should also note the inner diameter to determine which fork will fit; e.g. with or without HIC.
Bar Width
Again, riders have different preferences. For those who are getting into the sport, a good thing to keep in mind is choosing a bar that is at least the same with as their shoulders. (Remember you can always choose a wide bar and cut it to your preference!)
Height
Stunt scooters are usually lower than standard scooters. Choosing a height is also a matter of preference. Skilled riders often choose lower bars to gain stability and better control. A tip when choosing the right height is to make sure the bar reaches somewhere between your thighs and hip. Avoid making your bar wider than its height as this is considered unstylish by skilled riders and can be awkward to transport.
SCS
You cannot use a bar with a cutout with SCS, since the SCS clamp will have nothing to tighten around. You can cut your bar however, this will void the warranty. If a bar is without the cutout, we call it SCS ready.
Scooter Wheels
The more basic scooters come with 100mm or 110mm wheels for a low, stable center of gravity, advanced riders tend to ride with 110mm to 120mm.
Deck
If you are putting together a custom scooter, be sure to choose the right size of deck for your scooter. The rule of thumb is: the smaller the rider, the smaller the deck (within these sizing perimeters: 4″- 4.5” wide by 19″ – 21” long).
